Abstract

Background: Breast milk production is influenced by hormonal balance and the mother's physical condition. Sleep disturbances during the postpartum period can reduce the secretion of the hormones prolactin and oxytocin, which play a crucial role in lactation. During breastfeeding, mothers often experience disturbed sleep due to frequent nighttime feedings, infant crying, and adjustments to new roles. This study aims to determine the relationship between breastfeeding mothers' sleep quality and breast milk production. Methods: This study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. Data were collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire to assess sleep quality and observation sheets to assess breast milk production. Analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Due to the presence of cells with an expected count < 5, an alternative Fisher's Exact Test was used. Results: The results showed that the majority of breastfeeding mothers had good sleep quality (69.1%) and smooth breast milk production (64.3%). There was a significant relationship between sleep quality and breast milk production (p = 0.005; OR = 8.625), meaning mothers with good sleep quality were 8.6 times more likely to have a smooth breast milk supply. Conclusion: Sleep quality is significantly associated with breast milk production. Improving maternal rest management needs to be a priority for healthcare professionals as a promotive intervention in midwifery care.
